Why I Support Senator Santorum

Thank you for inviting me to post here, Alex. Since I'm new, I will first explain the three main reasons why I support the reelection of Senator Rick Santorum.

I find no issue to be of more relevance and importance today than the protection of innocent unborn human life. Every day, 4,000 preborn Americans are killed for the sake of convenience. Every day, more than 10 late term-babies are executed through the barbaric process called "intact dilation and extraction", also known as partial-birth abortion. This cannot be allowed to continue.

Senator Santorum has proven that he will not simply vote in favor of pro-life laws. He will tirelessly fight for legislation which recognizes that the unborn have a right to life. He will also fight for originalist judges who see no right to abortion in the text of the US Constitution.

Another issue of importance to me is the protection of the old and the sick from euthanasia. I believe that it is wrong to throw sick people away just because we don't want to take care of them. I also believe that it's wrong to forsake a person who is depressed to the point of suicide, abandoning him so that he takes his own life.

Senator Santorum was one of the loudest voices in our government in support of the life of Terri Schiavo, an innocent brain damaged woman who was cruelly dehydrated to death. Alarmingly, those who were in favor of executing Schiavo told us that she had to die to end her pain, yet at the same time told us that she was 'brain dead' and thus wasn't actually in pain. Also alarmingly, these folks told us that "Terri's family" wanted her to be killed, ignoring that it was at the request of her family - her father Robert, her mother Mary, her brother Bobby, and her sister Suzanne - that legislators like Santorum got involved in the first place.

The third main reason why I support Senator Santorum may seem like a contradiction at first. I support him because he wants to finish the job of helping the Iraqis set up a democratic country. How is being "pro-war" consistent with my positions on abortion and euthanasia? Simply because the goal of remaining in Iraq is to help the people there live in dignity under a government of their own choosing.

I can understand those who were against going to war in Iraq. However, I do not understand those who think that we should surrender Iraq to terrorists. That would be a huge mistake. It would be a huge victory for al-Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist organizations. It would embolden these terrorists to kill more innocent people. It would result in Iraq falling back into the hands of a dictator; a dictator capable of being even worse than Saddam Hussein. It would make the ultimate sacrifice of over 2,500 American troops completely meaningless. Now is not the time to debate whether or not it was a good idea to go into Iraq. The fact of the matter is that we are in Iraq, and we can either leave the country in chaos, or we finish the job and leave Iraq a free nation. Senator Santorum understands this, and he wants the Iraqi people to enjoy the same liberties that we enjoy in America.
